no sound in Windows XP

Hi,

I'm probably not the only one, but I have no sound when I run the game. When I install the game from the DVD, it won't run at all, just crashes to desktop. when I install all the patches (up to 1.40), the game runs but in total silence. I have all my latest video and sound drivers. Any ideas?
